March 3, 2012Dear Sir,I don’t know very many of the Progressive Labour Party MPs personally, but I’m sure most are decent people who, at some point, thought that they’d be able to handle the governing of Bermuda. And that may have been the case if the times created issues which allowed them to use their expertise. Unfortunately, time waits for no man and the problems of the last ten years have required skills that no one in the PLP had or has. I say with complete confidence that the international and the local business community have one major fear (and a lot of smaller ones) about the PLP and Bermuda’s future. That fear is that the PLP have neither the ability nor the experience that is required to solve virtually any of the problems we have in Bermuda today. The PLP as a whole is comprised of people who, with literally very few exceptions, “have taken a pay cheque on Friday rather than given one”.If you look at Bermuda today, anyone can see that the social fabric is unravelling, public education is not doing the job, the police tell us that “crime is down”, yet every Bermudian thinks the polar opposite, and every sector of business is spiralling out of control. The PLP have no idea how to solve these problems. They have no experience nor competence in business and after 14 years of utter failure, their confidence is shot.In the Bahamas and in Cayman, hotels are being built by Chinese workers who are imported to build the structure at a cost that allows a business to survive. Then they leave and those islands have employment opportunities for decades. In Bermuda, the Bermuda Industrial Union’s Chris Furbert and the PLP are so afraid that such an action would cost them votes that they continue down the old path of failure. Any bold move importation of inexpensive labour, privatisation, gambling, even giving some rights to guest workers so that they see some benefit to staying here all are met with fear and denial. Just look at today’s Royal Gazette where the PLP suggests that if a single civil servant is made redundant, this is somehow the worst possible thing between Heaven and earth. Fear at losing a voter ... Oh my God! The fear of losing power is so great that the racecard is now the only card. Read the PLP budget and the ‘plans’, ‘projections’, and the ‘intentions’ to do all sorts of things that will make it easier for the voter to vote for them. Read the Reply from the OBA and you cannot possibly be blind to their ability and spirit and the specific plans that they have. The OBA isn’t going to solve all our problems but when the PLP start telling their mates that it’s all about race ... there must be a collective groan and a disbelief that here cannot be 15,000 people who would vote for them just to continue a record of failure and incompetence all because of pigmentation.If the PLP were to win the next election, and I sincerely hope they do not, the exodus of workers from Bermuda will grow and very fast. Another five years means more failure, continuing loss of jobs and a debt spiral that will not stop at $1.4 billion. There are many Bermudians who either do not understand what people like Bob Richards and Kevin Comeau are saying or do not want to see the truth. They do not seem to sense that the gravy train is almost over and that there are large local retailers who are on the verge of shutting down and international businesses which are ready to head to more welcoming climes. When the guest workers and the tourists are no longer here and Bermudians continue to become unemployed, there will be no need for workers in the job sectors which support them ... grocery stores, importers, retailers, and the hotels and restaurants. The PLP offers no hope for the future they can’t attract the talent they need and they are still so bent on power and basing everything on race that they will continue to fail all of us. The Ewart Brown days of basing your power on race and rhetoric are, or should be, over. Its 2012 and the world is passing Bermuda by ... and Bermuda and Bermudians are just watching instead of facing reality.POLLYSouthampton
