An environmental crime
May 8, 2012Dear Sir,I am only a short term resident of Bermuda, attracted here by the renowned turquoise water and island lifestyle.I was excited to be in the huge crowds celebrating Bermuda End-to-End this past weekend which is a great event seemingly to unite all Bermudians for a cause. My excitement for the crowds was quickly muted by the complete disrespect of this beautiful Island. The event should be labelled “littering end-to-end”. Walking the Railway Trail, I was embarrassed at multitudes of people, young and older, who would finish their power bar and just drop the weightless plastic wrapper to the earth, despite carrying a backpack to place it in. Finished plastic bottles not just dropped to the ground but intentionally thrown deep into the trails side underbrush were everywhere. After mentioning to several litterers that a trash can can’t be far away, I gave up.The littering problem isn’t just limited to the trails. Walking daily around the downtown harbour, I easily collect a small bag full of nondegradable garbage. For an island limited by size and location, disparaging your greatest asset is truly an environmental and economic crime. Bermuda you can do better.JOEL KAVANAUGHUSA
