In the national interest
Employees under threatMay 9, 2012Dear Sir,It seems that when a One Bermuda Alliance politician is on ZBM TV or radio, it’s difficult to get on that show to comment or question that politician. So here I am again reaching out to an OBA representative again through The Royal Gazette’s Letters to the Editor. The OBA’s Trevor Moniz spoke some of his personal feelings towards the present KFC affair, saying it’s a private affair between the BIU and KFC, not a national affair, thus the Government shouldn’t intervene. Hogwash! The Labour Act of 1965 Section 30(l) was amended to the 1998 Section 30(l). In my opinion, the Labour Act is being broken by the KFC. Employers cannot be allowed to cancel collective bargaining agreements. That, I say, is why the Government has stepped in. That is good!Whatever the outcome of this court injunction by the KFC, the KFC workers want:(1) Any negotiating done for them using their present agreement as the foundation for any changes; and(2) for the negotiating to be done by the Bermuda Industrial Union. The majority of KFC workers voted for both those points amongst themselves in 2011. Why can’t these KFC directors respect that!Again, employees are under threat.ROGER LAMBERTSandysEditor’s Note: KFC argues that the contract between KFC and the BIU allows for the collective bargaining agreement to be terminated.
