Give change a chance
May 28, 2012Dear Sir,“Tomorrow the sun will rise on a new Bermuda …” Those words rang out strong over the crowd assembled and echoed throughout the night to an expectant people. Finally it had happened. “The psychological barrier” had been broken. We had Xpress’d ourselves, we had “made it happen”. We knew upon hearing those words that Bermuda was going to see a difference. Here was the “New Bermuda” and we were like expectant children on Christmas morning. As I cross the Island today, 14 years later, is this what we were expecting? Is this the “New Bermuda” that we Xpress’d ourselves for? Have we gained the promises that were just on the horizon on that night? Do we find ourselves wondering, is this the difference we want to see? We knew that some things would take time; “we” were new to this so a little leeway could be given and that leeway was given not once but twice. Can we give any more?As we stand again on the threshold of another opportunity to make a change, are we willing to admit that we have been disappointed in so many ways? Can we summon up the courage to admit that this is not working? Are we willing to say as we said on that day it is time to make a change?“Hope deferred makes the heart sick” … we have hoped for so long that “tomorrow the sun will rise on a new Bermuda” that we are sick of all the talk, sick of the disappointment, sick of just being sick.Don’t let the broken promise of Tuesday, November 9, 1998 continue …Send a message Bermuda, that broken promises are not good enough, that we are tired of being disappointed, it is time to give change a chance.C ANTHONY FRANCISOBA Candidate for Devonshire North Central
