What I’ve learned
July 19, 2012Dear Sir,I am a Canadian who has lived in Bermuda for the past five years. I am an expat who is very grateful for the life lessons I have learned while living and working in this beautiful country, and I would like to share them with your readers.Things I've Learned Living in BermudaRainwater is drinkable.Bermuda has the best beaches in the world. Hands down.Driving a car on the left side of the road is not a big deal. Driving a car on the left side of a one-lane road while avoiding a head-on collision with an overtaking bike (scooter) is something else.I enjoy a “good afternoon” greeting from a stranger.Live light. Material possessions only weigh you down and prevent you from being truly free.Age is only a number. I have met extraordinary individuals here in their 60s, 70s, 80s, and even 90s that seem to have forgotten that they’re “supposed” to slow down. They inspire me.I'm in awe of my mind and body’s resilience. Training in over 80 percent humidity and 33C weather, completing three marathons, three years in a row in three different cities. My … I think I can do anything.Patience, determination, and a worthy goal get you over any hill (literally and figuratively).Stop and really listen. You’ll find that each person you meet has something to teach you.I am married to a brilliant man and I am blessed to have him as my life partner.My family is simply awesome.Live your life to be different, not to conform. Going against the norm may be a little uncomfortable, but it sure is more fun.The world is actually tiny. It’s jam-packed full of new places to see, enticing food to eat, and amazing people to meet — explore it.The only way to truly make an impact in this world is to do something you love.I am not just a character in the story of my life, I am the author.
