Stand strong and vote PLP out

September 4, 2012Dear Sir,Let me first declare that I am no political scientist. With that said, why in the world would the Progressive Labour Party deserve a fourth term in governance in Bermuda? In the quest for the privilege to govern after the next election, we are affected by the global economic downturn with the most punishing impact on this Island many of us are now witnessing for the first time in our lives. The PLP government promised change and they delivered in spades. In this political era, change appears to have the definition as being the second coming! I am not part of the adoring family of the PLP but acknowledge they have tried to bring about a better Bermuda. In this pursuit they have failed. After three terms, we are not better off since 1998. If change is sacrosanct and all things good, then why not vote them out? Change is both good and bad as can be clearly seen after 14 years of inglorious rule by this hapless administration. The demands of democracy were met in 1998 with a change of government. Now they should be met again. Now family, as is the most touted term of endearment for our green government, the exhortation is stand strong. Never mind they have spent us into further economic misery, influenced by the desire to be seen as more sensitive to the voters and thereby more popular. Throw fiscal discipline and conservative spending to the wind, and Just Make It Happen is their mantra. Hey family, do you really believe there has been no mismanagement, overspend, overruns and millions unaccounted for? Cabinet Ministers behaving in a manner most unbecoming, with no censure and reinstatement at the earliest opportunity? The Auditor General and the Ombudsman’s concerns dismissed as simple bias?Put the shoe on the other foot and unemployment, crime, tourism woes and education challenges would not factor in the incumbent’s reelection quest? Never mind the PLP’s record, just stand strong and find every reason to excoriate the One Bermuda Alliance! Mature democracies throw the bums out and vote for change with promise and throw the bums out if they do not deliver. Example, Britain, USA, Canada and the Caribbean. The Conservatives and Labour have won and lost in the UK because the British give no party the right to political dominance, regardless of wrong headed performance. We can do better and more importantly should demand it. Why re-elect the same group that during its watch has presided over one of the most tumultuous periods in our history with incompetence! Stand up family and vote them out.WAYNE B SCOTTSmith’s
