A very near miss

HMCS Annapolis

October 18, 2012Dear Sir,Considering the hype about the movie ‘Argo’ it reminded me of a very unforgettable visit to Bermuda. In November 1980, as Commanding Officer of the Canadian warship HMCS Annapolis, I experienced one of your sudden unannounced famous wind and rain storms just as I was making a 180 degree manoeuvre in your confined harbour. I recall that it was not an easy recovery with the rain and gusty winds which forced me to use full power in an attempt to avoid being blown down on some anchored boats. This resulted in a full forward charge towards the jetty. I was told that the band and visiting crowd actually scattered; luckily I had reversed the engines in time and manoeuvred the ship in the tight allocated berth behind a freighter. The reason I mentioned the movie ‘Argo’ is because my ship was in Hamilton Harbour for the purpose of being the host vessel for the special Canada-US on-board reception where US dignitaries would be providing recognition to our Canadian Ambassador to Iran Ken Taylor. There may not have been much press coverage as the US was being quiet for diplomatic reasons.Looking back on the event it is very memorable. Can you imagine the storyline if I had smashed the boats and put a ‘Vee’ mark in your jetty. Thank God past training came through and the event went almost unnoticed. From my perspective; I obviously avoided a national incident and no doubt a court martial. However, there was a newspaper report the following morning (November 1) and I was wondering if somehow I might obtain a copy or any other related stories. Thank you.Cdr (Ret’d) JC BRANCONNIERCanada
