Many similarities to Obama

November 20, 2012Dear Sir,I read an article in The Royal Gazette yesterday entitled ‘Nothing In Common’ and I had to comment. The writer was suggesting that there were no similarities between the Progressive Labour Party Government and US President Barack Obama’s administration. Well Sir/Madam, before you go quoting wrongly, ensure that you are correct in your assertions. And, whether or not you support the PLP, don’t be bamboozled or mis informed.1. You say, that President Obama is pro-business and the PLP government is not. So, how do you explain the support for the EEZs and other business ventures? And FYI — the recession drove businesses away, not the Government.2. You say that President Obama inherited an economic mess, well our Government did as well; because, when the recession hit us, just like it did the rest of the world — Bermuda’s mess ensued. And, we are not unique.3. You say, that President Obama has a healthcare programme for all. Well our Government allowed all to have healthcare, when it introduced FutureCare. Question, was there a plan afoot under the last administration, that addressed the healthcare needs of our seniors; regardless of condition or financial stability? Thought not.4. You say, that President Obama had a plan to take guns off the street and decrease crime. Where have you been living? Have you even inquired about what this Government has done to combat crime? Thought not, because you wouldn’t have made such a statement. And remember, the police report to the Governor, not the Government. Don’t be confused.5. You say, President Obama has pushed for fiscal responsibility. Again. Where have you been? Obviously, you don’t know the Government’s fiscal plan? And just asking — all of the social programmes created, did the previous Government create any? (Free transport, free college tuition, FutureCare, free licenses for seniors, free day care, affordable housing etc)6. You say, that President Obama had only four years to get things right — true; the PLP has had 14 years; but guess what, the United Bermuda Party/One Bermuda Alliance (some of the same people) had 30 years and there was still a huge part of our society, that was disenfranchised, until this Government made things equitable.7. You say, that President Obama is about change, yes! But how dare you say that the PLP Government is not about change, but is only about power.Because of the government’s love for Bermuda and all of its people, it has changed the country, to make it a more cohesive and inclusive society. Now that’s not about being power hungry, that’s about real change my friend. Yes, we can learn from President Obama (as you say); we need to learn, that he always put the people first and so does the PLP; he was always badmouthed by the opposition and so is the PLP; he fights for the middle class and lower income, and so does the PLP and I can go on and on and on. Read the booklet, that shows the hundreds of PLP Government accomplishments, you’ll be amazed. And stop listening to those who speak empty words and make unrealistic promises!BE INFORMEDDevonshire
