PLP not like Barack Obama
November 26, 2012Dear Sir,Some Progressive Labour Party supporters like to compare themselves as similar to US President Barack Obama and the Democrats. This is wishful thinking, like me thinking I look like Brad Pitt. Barack Obama inherited an economy in a mess, which was not of his making. He may not have turned things around as quickly as some would have hoped, but he has done well. The PLP government inherited a thriving economy, and minimal debt and full employment. Look at us now! Mr Obama would be the first to admit he has made mistakes, but these mistakes were made while trying to do his best for the country. What of the “mistakes” that the PLP have made? Greed has played a major part. The list is long. The Housing Corporation scandal makes sad reading. Why did the PLP bosses go to such lengths to prevent the public from knowing where the money had gone, with three losing court cases, all of which concluded that the public’s right to know out weighed other issues? Did we the Bermuda public pay the legal costs when we won the case? Other examples of greed include the obscene overruns on most of the capital projects such as Berkeley, Heritage Wharf, TCD, Dame Lois Court Building, Port Royal Golf Course and the demolition of The Holiday Inn/Club Med. (Did the steel in these projects cost too much?)Are the people who are struggling happy with the payment of $160,000 to Leroy Bean and Mr Saunders for a 16-page report? That is $10,000 per page! Does anyone think that the $700,000 salary and housing perks, along with weekly first class tickets to the US paid by the Bermuda Hospitals Board for the services of Dr Thomas, was even a little excessive? Who got him the job and negotiated his salary? President Obama has tried to improve the fortunes of all his citizens, in start contrast to the PLP, which had sought to enrich their chosen few. Nice try, PLP. Bermuda’s public is not that naive!CHANGERSmith’s
