No longer in control

December 4, 2012Dear Sir,I am former Prison Officer who found the news report of the December 3, 2012, that an inmate refused to leave his cell to appear before the courts for the monthly Arraignment Session very disturbing. Firstly, it is the mandate and duty of the Department of Corrections to carry out the order of the courts. When a warrant is issued to produce any inmate before the courts they must assure that the inmate is produced, either via video conference or in person. The primary objective of the Department of Corrections by law is to ensure that the order of the court is carried out. This non-action by the Department to produce the inmate has shown me that the Department is no longer in control of the prison and sets a very dangerous precedent. If inmates are allowed to continue with this type of behaviour, what will be the next step? The Administration of the Department must take the necessary action now to rectify the blatant disrespect of both the Department (staff) and the Courts before they find themselves in a situation they cannot control.FORMER PRISON OFFICERWarwick
