What will the OBA cut?
December 2, 2012Dear Sir,The 2012 Presidential election in the United States is still fresh in the mind of all of us. During the campaign, Mitt Romney, the Republican Party Presidential candidate, wasted no time as he criss-crossed the country to hammer home relentlessly that unemployment was higher than when President Barack Obama took office. He also presented himself as the one to create: Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! for unemployed America. In the face of such a high unemployment rate, and jobs! Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! from Mr Romney; America re-elected President Obama. One has to wonder if America is foolish or plain stupid. The answer is simple. There is a saying that goes like this, ‘Talk is cheap’ and America knew that and did not buy into it. The position that Mr Romney was in as the challenger, he could offer America the moon, the sky, the universe and that is what he tried to do which America figured out was unrealistic. The “old people” also said: “It is easier said than done.”Craig Cannonier, Bob Richards and the rest of the One Bermuda Alliance are doing exactly what Mr Romney did. They are running a Romney campaign. They are blowing up before Bermuda what they call the national debt just as Mr Romney blew up unemployment. They are offering unemployed and underemployed Bermuda, Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! and better jobs! Just as Mr Romney did ... Bermuda, trust me on this, and trust the “old people”: “Talk is cheap.” “It is easier said than done.” America didn’t buy it. Will Bermuda buy it? We will have to wait and see. Mr Romney also blasted what he called ObamaCare and promised to scrap it the first day he took office if elected. The question is: What would he replace it with? The answer had to be Romneycare. The next question: What was Romneycare? The answer: “I don’t care ... about 47 percent of America.” The OBA, particularly through Louise Jackson blasted FutureCare left, right and centre. We therefore can expect the OBA to scrap FutureCare the first day in office if elected, and replace it with the Bermuda version of Romneycare which is: “I don’t care ... about sixty percent of Bermuda.” Will the OBA also scrap (a) Exemption of Land Tax for all seniors? (b) Free car licence for seniors? (c) Free ride on busses and ferries for seniors? (d) The government percentage paid on prescription drugs for seniors? (e) The mandatory use of seat-belts on vehicles? Finally Bermuda, remember: “All that glitters is not gold.”RENDOL JAMESSandys
