Race and yesterday’s people
December 27, 2012Dear Sir,Once again we have a letter published that clearly seems to find the reality that race does not play as significant a role in Bermuda and political life as the writer posits and finds difficult to accept the realities. This country has come a long way since 1834 notwithstanding all is not perfect. We continue to have yesterday’s people that want to drive the public discourse about race with a seeming life commitment to not let go of the past! We will continue to make meaningful gains in the area of race by people of goodwill. The demagogues will expire and the young people will make race a non issue, I'm sure of that.I live in a better Bermuda than I was born in, racially speaking with the evils of this oppression being arrested in so many areas.People join organisations where they feel welcome period! We have had political parties formed for many years, namely PLP, UBP, BDA, NLP and OBA. There have been others as well but those mentioned I believe were serious entities. All of these parties had integration, but the PLP being the oldest has the worst record of attracting parity of the races in their ranks.Mr Editor the PLP is about to celebrate its jubilee with 50 years in existence a most commendable achievement. The fact that whites do not join them in any meaningful way is solely the blame of white people after half a century? They accept no culpability at all? How strange when all the other parties did so much better with much less time.At what point is soul searching necessary and looking squarely in the mirror and seeing who/whom is the real problem. I intend no disrespect at all but only to suggest some blame needs to be apportioned where it belongs. Truth not only vindicates it also condemns and convicts.Alas there is hope, God bless you Mr Marc Bean you may not have my vote but you do have my prayers as you seek meaningful change.WAYNE B SCOTTSmith’s
