Investigate court building project

Time for an investigation? The project to build the Dame Lois Browne-Evans Building on Court Street has come under scrutiny this week (Photo by Mark Tatem)

July 24, 2013Dear Sir,Please allow me to comment on your headline “Firing architect cost you $4 million”.The former Government terminated Canadian firm Carruthers, Shaw and Partners, and employed Conyers and Associates to oversee the building of The Dame Lois Browne-Evans Court Building. We taxpayers paid approximately $4 million more as a result. The PLP Government said they were happy with the work CS&P were doing, but still fired them. The question we should be asking is why?Why did we pay so much more, when a contract was in place? We can only speculate to the reasons. Attorney General Mr Pettingill said: “The crux of the matter ran from the fact that CS&P had difficulty with what are generally described as OVERCHARGING and they refused to sign off on a certificate - that’s where the crux of it started.”So let me wrap my head around this. One firm was doing its due diligence and got fired because so? Another firm was then brought in and we paid them $4 million more than the firm doing a good job. What sense does that make?Who are the owners/directors of Conyers and Associates who in this writer’s opinion, must have profited by millions of dollars? Was there malfeasance or even corruption in the overseeing of this huge taxpayer-funded project? We have suspicions of many former projects and how they were run. This is another example of why we need forensic audits of such projects, so we can judge whether or not our custodians of the public purse were above board.Minister Pettingill, please order investigations of suspected wrongdoings, that is the least we deserve!CHANGERSandys
