Bailey’s Bay bridge objection

The old railway pylons at Bailey's Bay (Photo by Mark Tatem)

This letter was sent to the Department of planning15th October 2013Dear Sirs,Ref. PO278/13I recently returned from a holiday in Canada to discover a proposal had been made to build a bridge over Bailey’s Bay utilising the old pylons which stretch across the bay and were originally constructed for the Bermuda Railway.I was advised of this when I returned from my vacation by a neighbour who lives on Bay View Drive as I do. However on visiting Planning Department I was advised that the time for Objections was no longer open. However I am so appalled by the proposed Plan I feel I must submit my objections for consideration. Firstly I noticed that the only view of the proposed structure is taken from Bay Island. It is obvious that the photo as published in The Royal Gazette and on the Planning File should surely have been taken from the beach. This is the scenic view enjoyed by the neighbourhood and the many tourists who stop to take a photograph.Quite apart from the fact that the proposed bridge is most unattractive and will spoil the magnificent view, not only during the day but also the sunsets, there is the fact that in my view it will be an environmental disaster. From many years spent snorkelling in the area and over to Bay View Island I can assure you that many Parrot fish, Angel fish and other varieties can be found in the Bay, not to mention turtles which feed on the sea grasses. Indeed the Aquarium people often visit the Bay in the summer to tag the turtles. In addition to and most importantly there is the prospect of individuals fishing from the bridge. I know it is against the law to fish in various areas, such as from Flatts bridge for instance but has anyone ever been prosecuted for doing so? At times the Bay is full of fry and indeed on many occasions fisherman stop off to collect the fry in their nets for bait. The temptation to fish from the bridge would just be too great and the probability that turtles would get snagged in old lost/entangled fishing lines too great for Planning permission to be given to the proposal.I therefore urge you to turn down Application Ref PO278/13 on both environmental and scenic grounds.Yours sincerely,Anne Pearson
