One man one vote

November 24th, 2013

Dear Sir,

Do you remember the days when you could not vote if you did not own property in Bermuda!

Tell me then, how did we end up back in the same place in 2013?

There are some who would want us to believe it was the decisions of the former administration, though we know for sure the PLP government did not cause the mergers of so many large corporations around the world since the early 2000s. It was this constant takeover process that engulfed so many smaller competitors that aligned the world with disaster IN 2007/8 ...

However let’s take a closer look at the electoral direction the present administration of Bermuda, the OBA, is attempting to overwhelm us with.

There was a time when the participants in an election in Bermuda had to own property. There was a time when each person, in each voting district, had two votes and we grew to the conclusive truth that one vote for each voter was the correct/fair format.

Now under the Home Affairs Minister and the OBA cabinet, we are again engaging in an unfair election process.

The residents of the municipalities will only have one vote each. The owners or those renting buildings in the municipalities will, in numerous cases, have multiple votes to ensure their voting choices will override the residents.

For example, if a citizen owns multiple businesses/buildings within the city or town district they will have a multiple choice effect on the outcome of any future election including the coming 2015 election.

Could this be a shadow of us returning back to a format that will jeopardise the rights/will of Bermudaisn? A thought for you to ponder; could the same thing happen if we buy into this commercial immigration policy — which in essence is a trade-off of voting rights for investment funds to anyone who is not a Bermudian.

Signed,
