We shall not see his like again

November 26th, 2013

Dear Sir,

The former editor of The Royal Gazette, the late David L. White, lived by an inner code known in its fullness only to him. He was kind and generous, demanding and precise.

I believe it is important to extend condolences if you care about the person who has died; and while I normally would do this in private, in this case, I believe it appropriate, in honour of his editorship, to write to the newspaper he developed and grew.

We agreed on nothing political, but we served without argument together under his chairmanship on the Board of Trustees of the Bermuda National Gallery.

In addition, for a short time he was my constituent and I his Parliamentary representative.

I have many fond memories of gatherings at his home and I can only agree with those who have noted how he demonstrated the depth of his love for Bermuda through the donation of his art collection to the Bermuda National Gallery in 2012.

We shall not see his like again.

I wish to express my sympathy to his family and friends for their loss. He will be greatly missed.

Dame Jennifer Smith
