Let the public decide GPS issue
November 27, 2013
Dear Sir,
Having taken the opportunity to attend a Taxi Industry meeting on Monday 25th, where the Transport Minister, P.S. and Director of TCD were in attendance, as a driver with approximately 15 years experience, and former owner, I’m compelled to convey my perspective / suggestions proposed, regarding the fare increases and other related matters.
The contentious issue of technology reigned supreme. Perspectives discussed were the legislation of the so-called ‘GPS’, which actually is a data information relay system, and tracking device, be made optional.
The initial objective of the said technology to increase efficiency of service has not been fulfilled.
I would suggest, a consultative approach; be it a survey of the general public, hotels, and restaurants as well as businesses, in order for the market / consumer determine the different dispatching method, that suits their needs.
There have been customers that have expressed their displeasure with the company that has the digital data information relay system, regarding response time, and consequently having to make a second call to the company that is currently using the analogue system, and receiving better service.
The second company also has the capacity for the technology, and has experimented with it, to find that customer satisfaction is more efficient with the analogue technology.
Therefore, once again, let the market determine, whether it is the customer, the owner or driver, which option satisfies their needs.
