Meaningful questions, please

Dear Sir

As I listened to a news conference today on the appointment of the Board members of the new Tourism Authority I was, once again, given evidence that some people just don’t want to move forward. I appreciate that Bryan Darby can ask any question he wants but, even if some see legitimacy in asking a question about the racial make-up of the Board, Mr Darby had a real opportunity to ask a more meaningful question.

There are so many people in Bermuda who think race should be a factor in everything and I guess Mr Darby thinks that maybe racial diversity — as opposed to competence — will solve our tourism problems. Mr Darby, don’t you think you know David Dodwell well enough to know that he is driven by a passion to help Bermuda and is only going to work with the best? You are in a position of advantage because you CAN ask questions as a media member.

But by the same token some might suggest that you could be more useful if you asked less-media driven questions and more intellectual questions.

And since I’m a fan of yours for many years, may I suggest that when you ask questions, you might refrain from wording the question not only to clearly state your personal opinion but seemingly to get the desired result? Aren’t you supposed to report versus opine.
