A class of arrogant self seekers
January 10, 2014
Dear Sir,
Footballers, tennis players, golfers etc. no longer play for the love of the game and are paid obscene amounts of money. Rugby used to be an amateur game and that too has succumbed to being professional. The Olympic Games, which in the early days was amateur, now have professionals. Gone are those happy days!
Therefore, it was interesting to read in a BBC news analysis, a quote attributed and made 100 years ago, to David Lloyd George, who was the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the UK, commenting on the amount of money flowing at that time, and he “was worried this new money would create an arrogant class of self seekers ......and footballers”.
I wonder what his comments would be today? “I told you so.”
Sincerely
Antony Siese
