Why are customs officials incorrectly double taxing on goods claimed at Bermuda Airport? Customs also charged $100 for a complimentary bag that was not claimed because it was part of a promotion.

Friends of mine travelled to Miami on vacation. Upon returning to the Island, they were treated poorly by customs officials who insisted they recalculate their duty form to include the US tax instead of charging for the cost of the goods before taxation.

Furthermore, they charged my friend for a free promotional item which easily could have been verified if customs looked on the store’s website, which would have proven that bag was being given away with certain amount of purchases.

What recourse do Bermudians and guest workers have to get back from the Accountant General the overcharge by customs as this is not the first time?
