Inconsiderate walkers trashing Bermuda

Litter-bugs: Thousands competed in Saturday’s End-to-End walk but some made their mark by throwing away water bottles and other trash along the route

Dear Sir,

It was great to see so many people participating in the End-to-End Walk last Saturday. It was also great to see so many supporters and volunteers along the route cheering, clapping and handing out goodies.

It made the entire experience a real pleasure. Truly, Bermuda at its best.

However, from a participants perspective, what really broke my heart was the amount of litter that was created. Without exception, after every water stop, the sides of the trail were littered with whatever was being distributed at each of these stops.

I understand that the reusable plastic water bottles were employed as an attempt to reduce trash but reducing trash didn’t seem to matter to some participants.

Instead, these individuals insisted on tossing the giveaways to the side of the trail. The long, skinny plastic Catlin bottles were an especially popular item to be found littered along the End-to-End route.

And what I found really irritating was that trash could often be found just a few feet away from an empty trash can!

The situation reminded me of a sign that is often posted in a workplace kitchen that says “Your mother doesn’t work here, so clean up after yourself”.

Frankly, I don’t think it’s a mother’s job, or anyone’s job for that matter, to clean up after the thoughtless act of trashing the place where we all live.

Truly, Bermuda at its worst.

Bermuda is arguably the most beautiful island in the world, let’s all do our part to keep beautiful.

Bermuda, we are better than this.

Put your trash where it belongs!

A YOUNG
