Dear Sir,

It is altogether fitting and proper that we recognise heroes in this manner.

I sometimes wonder if we haven’t missed a few.

Was Fred Reiss accorded hero status?

He was a professional engineer who came here in the sixties from the United States and started forming Captive Insurance Companies, which grew into an industry, in which Bermuda leads the world.

Effectively, this started the international insurance and reinsurance business here, which became a pillar of Bermuda’s economy considering the legal firms, Government staff, accounting and actuarial firms and management companies involved.

The staffing involved also supported hotels, restaurants, shops and housing.

Given all of these benefits it is my view that Fred Reiss should be accorded hero status.
