St George’s hotel criticism is sour grapes
Dear Sir,
It was interesting to hear the news the other evening when Zane DeSilva and Wayne Furbert were castigating the Bermuda Government over the lease being proposed for the new hotel development in St George. (I believe there was talk of a 262-year lease on the property, but who gave Coco Reef a 125-year lease?)
While I am in agreement that no properties should have a lease of that length, and I believe it was a 99-year lease the US Government had on the baselands, I really believe that both Mr DeSilva and Mr Furbert are suffering from political amnesia.
It was also the Brown Administration that closed down a perfectly good golf course. What would it cost to get that back in shape? I think it is a case of sour grapes that for some seven years there was talk of a new hotel in St George, but in spite of all the hot air, it never came to fruition.
I believe that when the PLP got the Government reins in 1998, there was a budget surplus and in 14 years the country went into a deficit, which, even with good administration, to recover it will take another 15 to 20 years.
God help Bermuda should the PLP ever gain power again, and I say power because that is the way it looks at it rather than good governance. The OBA is not perfect by any means, but in this case, it is the lesser of two evils.
