Street lighting in Hamilton is very spotty

Shining example: a street light against a grey sky in Hamilton

Dear Mr Editor,

In the midst of all the preparation for the America’s Cup, I have a concern that I would like to have investigated. I have noticed that the street lighting in Hamilton is very spotty.

I walk in the city every night and there a large areas without any lights. Some of it predates Joaquin.

I have notified the Corporation of Hamilton and Belco. Belco says some of them are the responsibility of the corporation. It would be interesting to find out the percentages of lights that are working and not working. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the outages.

Some Hamilton sidewalks are in need of repair and can cause injury even in good lighting. If it wasn’t for the lights of businesses on some streets, it would be pitch black. Is this how we plan to treat our America’s Cup visitors? They must think we are a Third World country.

Here are some of the outages I have noticed:

• Par-la-Ville Road north

• Lights at the Serpentine/Woodlands Road roundabout

• Reid Street between Burnaby and Parliament

• Reid Street between Court and King

• King Street south of Church Street

• Church Street in spots

• Victoria Street east

• Nellie’s Walk in front of City Hall

• Victoria Street behind City Hall

I have taken to using a flashlight. What century are we in?

Sincerely,

IN THE DARK
