Silent majority have given away Bermuda’s future

Making their voices heard: protesters march up Queen Street last week

Dear Sir,

I do not know how long Bermuda has not been a democracy, but when I woke up this morning (March 18) and read in The Royal Gazette that the immigration reform Bill has been withdrawn, I knew that Bermuda was certainly not a democracy any longer.

This “climbdown” does not show the strength of the small opposition to the immigration proposals, but it points to the pathetic weakness of those Bermudians who supported the Government’s stand but who would not stand up and be counted at this time.

Those, the majority in Bermuda, by their inaction and silence, have given away Bermuda’s future, their future; and if that wasn’t enough, they also gave away their children’s future.

We will focus on unity, says Michael Dunkley. He does know, doesn’t he, that it takes both parties to want “unity” in order for there to be any chance of that happening? He does know that, doesn’t he?

The Progressive Labour Party and the Bermuda Industrial Union do not want, and are not interested in, unity. They want power.

The silent majority has given it to them. The One Bermuda Alliance, the elected Government of Bermuda, must from now on do the bidding and wishes of the PLP/BIU, or suffer the consequences of the wrath of the small minority who are willing to destroy our country and the silent majority who cannot find the energy or willpower to show their support for the elected government when it is needed.
