America’s Cup opportunity lost

Emirates Team New Zealand celebrate winning the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda (File photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Dear Sir,

Your editorial today (July 27, 2020) was spot-on. Bermuda’s squandering of the America’s Cup legacy was the biggest lost opportunity for probably the past half-century.

History will judge the Progressive Labour Party government harshly on this, and rightly so. All its derisory rhetoric about “boat races for billionaires” should fool no one; the PLP made a deliberate political decision not to capitalise on all that AC35 brought us, and it has cost us dear.

Let’s just hope that all the superyacht owners that it now wants to attract are blissfully unaware that Bermuda’s “welcome” is an expedient sham.
