Visitors View

Dr Ed Harris

A wonderful experienceMarch 19, 2011Dear Sir,On Wednesday, March 16, 2011, my husband and I visited the Dockyard. We arrived at 10.30am and did not leave until 3.30pm. We enjoyed the entire day. We spent hours reading about the history of Bermuda. The presentation of the information was very well done, and understandable. The pictures, illustrations, and actual photographs enhanced the information. Our favourite buildings were the 1850 Ordnance Bldg/Queen’s Exhibition Hall and the Commissioner’s House. After viewing most of the “rooms” we then returned to the Pillared Hall and were amazed at the intricacy and detail in the mural. I was glad that we viewed the mural last because we could see everything we had read about in the painting. It was magical. There was so much information everything from the history of the Newport-Bermuda Race, slavery, Portuguese people, to both World Wars, to the beautiful photography of the longtail by Dr Reg Grundy. There is so much I could say, but I want to say a thank you to Dr Edward Harris: Thank you for undertaking such a huge task and giving Bermuda’s history a personal “face”. It was definitely worth the admission fee.I have Dr Harris’s Heritage Matters, Volume 2, and reading the excerpts is more meaningful after visiting the museum.Congratulations on a magnificent achievement. How wonderful for Bermuda to have its history recorded in such an understandable, and yes, entertaining manner.BARBARA HOLOWACK AND ROB HOLOWACKWaterloo, Ontario
