Wrong mindset at heart of roads chaos

Dear Sir,

(File photograph by Blaire Simmons)

According to the police, the problem on our roads is our mindset needs to change. First, to change our mindset, we have to find out how it was created.

All the education in the world is not going to affect a thing. When road users get on the road and start following everyone else, then finding out they can get away with anything even in front of the police — then they own the road.

I have seen two bikes racing each other right past a police car; nothing was done to stop them. I've seen a bike pass a car on a totally blind corner, almost hitting the police car coming around the corner — again nothing was done.

I'm sure many people can tell many more stories. This is how the mindset was created.

Now to fix the mindset, the police need to get out there and police the roads! Period!

The police have to show road users that it is a privilege to use the roads, and that there will be consequences if that privilege is abused.

You have to do what it takes — be consistent and thorough — until eventually you get fewer and fewer people trying to "get away" with reckless and careless driving and riding.

Doing nothing but talk is going to create chaos. That's exactly what you see on the roads today.
