Where is David?
Dear Sir,
A month or two ago I wrote to you, and you kindly printed my letter, about the return of David Lopes to the Bermuda Broadcasting radio airwaves for his morning show from 6 to 10 am on Inspire, FM105. Sadly, the past two weeks he has been absent again and I can’t help but wonder what in the world is going on at Bermuda Broadcasting?
As far as I know, David is very healthy and capable of running his show, which so many of us older types enjoy every morning. I miss his regular updates on the weather, news, community events, traffic and, while I am not a big fan of baseball, I can imagine those who are really do miss those updates also. I particularly appreciate the English Premier League football updates, especially when Manchester United win!
Whoever at Bermuda Broadcasting is making the decision to remove David’s show ought to have a rethink. With our community ageing, the demographics support having someone such as David to communicate to us. He gets us where those younger don’t, and with his 55-plus years of experience, there is no one else who commands his presence. Frankly, they couldn’t even tie his shoelaces!
If I were an advertiser, there is no better radio announcer to get your message out to the baby boomer and spending generation that we are than David Lopes, with his curly hair, skinny legs and all. And for those companies who committed to advertising on his show — and quite a few come to mind — they ought to be up in arms that the hierarchy at Bermuda Broadcasting has removed him from the airwaves.
By way of this letter, I hope those who support David will jam up the Bermuda Broadcasting and ZBM telephone lines and e-mail inbox with appeals to get David back on the air.
When David is ready to retire, he will. Let him make that decision rather than some management bureaucrat. After all, he and other radio announcers like him generate the revenues for Bermuda Broadcasting/ZBM, not the admin team in the penthouse!
