Let’s honour our commitment to Flora and rename Corkscrew Hill
Dear Sir,
I am writing to your column once again hoping that the Government will continue to honour Flora Duffy by renaming Corkscrew Hill to Flora Duffy Hill, as proposed before she returned to Bermuda.
Flora Duffy Day was bestowed on her for winning Bermuda’s first gold medal at the Olympic Games. I’m not sure, and I’m sure no one else is sure, when Bermuda might see another gold medal winner in any future Olympics unless Flora might wish to win another in 2024.
Flora was instrumental in laying out the route — which included Corkscrew Hill — for Bermuda’s first International Triathlon in Hamilton which was on its own merits a major victory.
She gave Bermuda world recognition for being the smallest country to have won a gold medal at an Olympics.
It would certainly give the hill major significance going forward, for all future generations to follow Flora’s track shoes in pursuit of their own gold medal dreams.
We should stand by what was bestowed on her by Flora’s island home. If a vote was taken islandwide, I’m sure the consensus would agree to the name change. Over a period of time, we all would get used to the change. All would be proud of the renaming of the hill Flora Duffy Hill.
Let’s do it!
