Modern times or ancient? That 1966 silver medal feels like yesterday
Dear Sir,
First let me congratulate you on your excellent coverage of our athletes and their outstanding achievements at Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Particularly outstanding, of course, were our two medal-winners, Flora Duffy and Jah-Nhai Perinchief.
However, the caption below the photo of Jah-Nhai on page 28 of the Tuesday, August 9 edition raises a question. It refers to “modern times” at the Commonwealth Games, and I would be interested to know how these modern times are defined. For instance, did my silver medal in the long jump when representing Bermuda at the 1966 Games in Jamaica fall within modern times? Or was that ancient times?
I certainly feel ancient on occasion these days, although I am still proud of winning Bermuda’s first Commonwealth track and field medal.
Once again, congratulations to Flora and Jah-Nhai. I remember well the sacrifice and hard work that it takes to reach that level, and they deserve to be lauded and remembered by all.
