David Burt’s gain is our loss

David Burt, the Premier, has won a final four-year term as leader of the Progressive Labour Party (Photograph by Akil Simmons)

Dear Sir,

I find it quite ironic that in today’s Royal Gazette (October 21, 2022), you report that the Progressive Labour Party delegates conference chose to confirm David Burt as party leader over his challenger, Curtis Dickinson. Essentially, the delegates have voted for “more of the same”.

Also, in today’s Gazette, you report that the Centre for Evidence-Based Management advised that Bermuda is taking a huge risk in chasing fintech business — one of our Premier’s pet projects. The word “Arbitrade” springs to mind ...

Further, Robert Stubbs, who was a panellist at Sandys Secondary Middle School this week, at which Chris Furbert was a fellow panellist and someone in his position as head of the Bermuda Industrial Union who endorsed the Premier is quoted as stating: “The audience expressed passionately their dissatisfaction with Bermuda’s management and the appalling state of our economy.”

Maybe the delegates who returned the Premier as leader know something that the rest of us don’t, but I would have thought that Curtis Dickinson offered a real opportunity for Bermuda to change course.

Sadly, that opportunity has been lost, to our island’s detriment.
