Chief Justice deserved better
Dear Sir,
I read with disappointment the article on the Honourable Chief Justice Narinder Hargun, which described his appointment as an affront to the Progressive Labour Party. The article contained a number of discriminatory remarks that fall well below the standards we have a right to expect from government officials.
Although the Honourable Chief Justice Narinder Hargun conducted his role with both excellence and integrity, the article focused on how his ethnicity was an affront. The comments were deplorable.
The next chief justice should be selected on the basis of competence and should, of course, include Black Bermudians among others who are suitably qualified to be considered.
It seems those quoted in the article lack the ability and expertise to devise any practical policies, programmes and interventions to improve access to opportunities for Black Bermudians, and instead have to resort to the rhetoric of racial division. While this may be a cheap and easy electoral tactic, it serves only to create division and resentment from which no one benefits.
Maybe it’s time the PLP sought some actual expertise in diversity and inclusion, and focused on developing a vision for an inclusive and united Bermuda.
Bermuda deserves better.
