Delays to fixing roads is costing dearly

Potholes around the island (Photograph by Akil Simmons)

Dear Sir,

I had my car in for service this morning (September 28, 2023) and received a call from the technician after his road test in the wake of servicing. I have been told that my front suspension is a problem and will need correcting in the near future.

Obviously, this is an expensive job and one which I will have to postpone. There is no doubt that my car is one of many vehicles that are experiencing problems. As long as our roads are in the appalling condition they are, suspension problems will persist.

When will the Department of Works and Engineering seriously address the state of our roads and start taking steps necessary to remedy this problem?

We know this work will take some time, money and — most importantly — people who are knowledgeable in road-surfacing. However, when will this start? You don’t have to spend $100 million — as Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch estimated the cost to be — but please start somewhere!
