Israelism is an opportunity to learn
Dear Sir,
I am writing to respond to your coverage of a film showing on Sunday. The documentary Israelism highlights the experience of the film-makers growing up Jewish and only learning about Palestine and the Israeli occupation in their adulthood.
As a Jewish person who grew up in Hebrew school, went on Birthright, and has sent her child to Hebrew school, I know this journey personally.
I know the pain that October 7 has caused. I stand against Hamas.
I know that the Israeli Government has also caused pain and suffering.
I appreciate the group who came forward and spoke out on sufferings at their November vigil for peace. I am proud to be part of this group, which created a peaceful environment to share the concern for all lost lives.
I do not appreciate your coverage of Israelism, the film this group has arranged to show on February 11. You made two errors that need to be addressed:
1, If you are going to include the loss of lives for Israelis, please include those of Palestinians as well
2, You implied we hosted the vigil because of the attack by Hamas. The vigil was for the loss of innocent lives in Gaza and Israel
I am deeply saddened by all lives that have been taken in this conflict and continue to be taken.
As a Jewish person who knows this conflict is difficult, emotional and complex, I ask everyone to see this film.
Take a moment to open yourself up for the opportunity to learn.
This film isn’t everyone’s story; it isn’t even my story. However, it gives you a better look into this issue and allows you to meet on a screen the real people this conflict has affected.
Israelism is a documentary film made by Jewish people, and it recently won the audience award at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival.
Please join me on Sunday to watch it for free at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute at 4pm.
