Public health risk at Tynes Bay

Dear Sir,

About 11.30am today (Friday, November 1) at the Tynes Bay Waste to Energy Facility, a driver immediately in front of me removed a white plastic bag from the back of his van. It burst in his hands and spewed needles and other medical waste over the public drop-off area.

Why was medical waste being delivered to the Tynes Bay public facility? Why were the needles and other waste being carried in plastic bags and not in a secure container? What became of the Government’s specific site for such burning? Who is responsible for putting public health at risk?

Inhalation, contamination and piercing come to mind.

The community should beware when delivering household trash to Tynes Bay.
