Pass marks for not going into hiding
Dear Sir,
In looking at today's paper (November 16, 2024), my admiration for the embattled education minister lies in two particular things — one, that he is committed to bringing about good to the country by means of a beefed-up public education system; and, two, he has his children in public school, demonstrating authentic trust in the system, and also a certain integrity. Problems arise, but he has not thrown up his hands and walked away.
On that same note, I give kudos also to the Premier, David Burt, whose children are in public school.
While I am here, may I say, as a former public school teacher who knows first-hand about walking a picket line, that I have a strong desire that the Bermuda Union of Teachers Union and education authorities find a way towards a less acrimonious relationship.
My suspicion is that the evident friction is one of the drivers of the flight to private schools.
