Our driving is bad enough as it is

What must our few visitors think: a passing motorist cannot avoid being distracted by this array of roadside advertisements, which dwarf the rather more serious signage designed to save lives (Photograph by Akil Simmons)

Dear Sir,

Dame Pamela Gordon has rightly pointed out this week that it is every Bermudian’s duty to report planning infringements, so I have to ask, am I the only one wondering whether Ptix and all the other event planners have planning permission for the rather ugly banners and billboards that are appearing rather too regularly along our roadsides? It makes us look like a Third World country.

Besides the legality of it, who do they think is reading the banners? While driving, it would be lethal to take one’s eyes off the road immediately in front for fear of disappearing down one of the many thousands of massive potholes and never being seen again.

Between the weeds on the verges, the potholes everywhere and the ugly banners, there isn’t a scenic route left in Bermuda. What must our few visitors think?
