Brilliance of Burt will be missed when he is gone

Dear Sir,

As we approach the upcoming election and look ahead to 2026, I would like to take a moment to share my reflections on David Burt, the Premier, and his service to Bermuda. In my view, Mr Burt has been one of our best leaders, if not the best.

We are fortunate to have witnessed his journey through the ranks of the Progressive Labour Party to become its leader and our government leader as premier.

The late LaVerne Furbert recognised his potential early on — the “Brilliance of Burt”. He is not only impeccably educated and intelligent, but also deeply committed to the betterment of our Bermuda community. His skills as an excellent communicator, along with his understanding of policy and the legislative process, have positioned him to lead us effectively.

Mr Burt has guided Bermuda through some of the toughest times of the early 21st century. While the rest of the Western world continues to struggle, we have managed to stand strong and embark on a path to recovery ahead of many others. Under his leadership, the Government has prioritised the progress of our people, focusing on increased funding that nurtures talent, builds skills and promotes higher attainment at all levels. This approach stands in stark contrast to frivolous pursuits such as yacht races or catering to wealthy interests at the expense of our children’s future.

Moreover, Mr Burt has made significant strides on the international stage, establishing connections with global enterprises more effectively than any of his predecessors. His excellent communication skills, positivity and approachable demeanour have allowed him to engage with individuals from various backgrounds, both locally and internationally.

While I acknowledge the contributions of past premiers such as Sir Jack Sharpe, Sir John Swan and Ewart Brown, the “brilliance of Burt” in the political arena is unparalleled.

His intricate knowledge of world affairs, legislative policies and regulations enables him to present our small island of Bermuda as a nation that truly punches above its weight on the global stage.
