You owe it to yourself to experience the arts
Dear Sir,
I wanted to share my thoughts on arts in Bermuda. April 15 is World Art Day, a day dedicated to art and creativity. As someone who grew up around the arts, and wanting my children to grow up around the arts, I’m excited for Bermuda to keep growing their art scene.
Thanks to the community, non-profits, the Bermuda Arts Council and local artists, my children and I get the opportunity to explore the arts in so many different ways. This helps them engage with their creativity, get to appreciate different cultures, and will help them grow to be independent thinkers.
I encourage everyone, young and old, to take time this weekend — and every weekend if possible — to check out the art scene on the island.
Here are some highlights:
• Murals: including Shanna Hollis’s vibrant Love Thy Neighbour on Palmetto Road
• Gallery shows: today is the last day to check out The Living Loom, Kimberly Fisher’s amazing interactive show at Masterworks
• Bermuda Walls: a free event on Sunday at Butterfield & Vallis
I also want to show gratitude to the Bermuda Society of Arts and the Bermuda National Gallery for putting on two wonderful youth art shows. The BNG’s Junior Bicentennial is until May 3, while the BSoA’s show with the Department of Education’s amazing work in both public and private primary schools ended this week. Thank you to all the teachers who have inspired these creative works. I am excited to see the upcoming middle school and senior school show!
Art is for everyone. If you are looking for more opportunities to engage in art, there are workshops, camps and classes around the island. Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation offers multiple creative opportunities for children, and bursaries are available for those families that need them.
I hope everyone has a creative, inspiring World Art Day, and brings creativity into their life every day.
