Bank puts MV Longtail up for sale

Charter boat captain Gavaska Lodge has lost the MV Longtail after being unable to cover the cost of fully repairing the 65-foot catamaran. The Longtail came off its mooring last February in a severe winter storm. Its hull was damaged after it smashed it into White’s Island.Mr Lodge said yesterday insurance money did not cover the cost of fixing it and he was unable to get a bank loan for the repairs. He was just two years into the business when the storm hit.On top of that, a week later, Mr Lodge’s family’s apartment on Mount Hill in Pembroke was destroyed by fire.He had been working on the Longtail for 20 years under previous captains and owners before buying the boat three years ago. After losing his dream, Mr Lodge advised others in the charter boat business or who own boats to read the fine print on their insurance policies and to keep up with the maintenance.Butterfield Bank has taken possession of the boat and is now trying to sell it. Mr Lodge estimated the damage at $200,000.Having held his captain’s licence for nearly 20 years, the entrepreneur said he hopes to find work in the charter boat or another industry.Butterfield Bank is advertising the Longtail for sale with a viewing at Morgan’s Point. The Longtail is originally from Florida and has been in Bermuda since 1986. It is licensed for 200 people and comes with a built-in DJ system and bars.Offers must be received by the Bank’s Credit Risk Department, in writing by Friday, December 16 at noon or by e-mailing sealedbid[AT]butterfieldgroup.com
