The Gourmet Boutique & Galler Chocolatier in Hamilton has begun selling wine and spirits to complement its current range of fine fare.In a venture with Burrows Lightbourn’s online delivery website, WineOnline.bm, the chocolate and cheese merchant received its liquor license in early December and has been selling a selection of wine in the run-up to Christmas. It all came together quickly before the holiday with much of the wine selection being dessert wine, ports and champagne but the plan is to bring in a larger range of wines and spirits.“It was always in our plan to do this. We were waiting for the right time and on the liquor license,” said co-owner Bernadette Walker, who spoke to The Royal Gazette from Atlanta where she and her husband Leetroy are looking to open another shop like the one in Bermuda. “Over the holidays we also included wine in our gift baskets and that went over very well.”The shop sells a range of fine foods from chocolate, shortbread and tea to cheese, caviar, foie gras and smoked salmon. While the WineOnline.bm sign is up, it is not a Burrows Lightbourn store and neither beer nor miniature liquor bottles will not be sold there.“It’s an up-market shop and sits on probably the busiest corner in Hamilton,” said Richard Hartley, managing director of Burrows Lightbourn. “There’s quite a lot of synergy between chocolate, cheese, gifts and wine.”Their hope is that customers will come into the shop to pick up their chocolate or cheese and a bottle of wine in one stop. There will also be a computer station available where customers can browse WineOnline.bm’s selection of 1,400 wines that are available through their site and have larger orders delivered to their home.“We’ve had a good response so far considering we haven’t done any advertising or marketing,” said Mr Walker. “We went through the small inventory we had and had to do a reorder.”This month the shop is looking to expand its inventory.“We are looking to bring in more red and white wines to best complement what we offer in the shop and in our gift baskets.”Mr Walker said she was also planning to offer wine, cheese and chocolate tastings at least once a week starting in the Spring and possibly around Valentine’s Day.
