New Dockyard businesses open in time for cruise ship season
Several new businesses have opened in Dockyard for the 2012 cruise season, which sees more than 6,000 passengers and crew pouring off visiting luxury liners almost every day of the week.Four to five mega cruise ships are scheduled to call in Dockyard each week through September. After a soft-opening last August summer, Pompano Beach Club’s longtime pastry chef Joerg Rudolph is ready for the crowds this summer at his popular new European-style cafe at the entrance to the Victualling Yard.In addition, three new stores have opened in the past few months in the Clocktower Mall, which continues to have a wait list of prospective tenants. They include:— Bermytreats, a speciality candy and snack store operated by Carol Jackson.— Chezar’s, a seasonal store owned by Caesar Botello. In the former Iana children’s clothing space, Chezar’s will beach wear and sun ‘n’ sand goods in the summer, Hallowe'en supplies in the fall, gifts and decorations around Christmas etc, as inventory changes according to the season.— Rosebuds, a women’s clothing boutique operated by Rosalie Martin. She started the business as one of the outdoor vendors but the business built up to where she was able to have a physical store to sell her popular brightly coloured clothing lines. She took over the space formerly occupied by Wire Art jewelleryThe new Dockyard Pastry & Coffee Shop offers freshly baked pastries, pies, and desserts, as well as sandwiches and paninis and coffees and cappuccino and wine and beer. Now open seven days a week from 9am to 6pm, the cafe also serves authentic English afternoon tea with fresh scones and clotted cream.“I figured Dockyard needed something like this,” owner Mr Rudolph said, noting there had been pastry cafes in Dockyard in the past, but they’d all closed.“I think it wasn’t time for it. But times have changed and people now are more appreciative of quality ingredients and quality desserts and European pastries. We make our cakes fresh every day.”Mr Rudolph, who has worked in Bermuda at Pompano since 1987, said the cafe had been doing well since opening and advertising had been mostly through word-of-mouth.“We smile, we listen to our customers and we are willing to change. We are not set in our ways.”Joanna Cranfield, Wedco assistant business development manager, said the space the Pastry Shop occupies in the Victualling Yard near Bone Fish Bar & Grill was previously used by HSBC for an ATM. She said after Mr Rudolph expressed interest in the space, which has a large outdoor area, they were able to get HSBC to agree to move their ATM to a location near the Frog & Onion.“They were happy to move,” she said. “It’s great that garden area is now being used.”Ms Cranfield said there were a number of other vacant spaces in Dockyard but they needed renovating. She said Wedco would be happy work with prospective tenants and provide concessions if entrepreneurs had an idea for one of the spaces and were willing to foot the bill for renovations. She said the Clocktower Mall was full in terms of tenants and while there was a wait list, tenants were carefully selected to keep the right mix of businesses.“We are trying to keep some diversity and limit stores that sell too much similar merchandise,” Ms Cranfield said, adding she was pleased with the start to the cruise season so far which as she put it, “has two ships in port more times a week than not”.She added that due to the high turnout of more than 1,000 people for the last ‘old school explosion’ free live music event in Dockyard, Mr Cranfield said more of them will be scheduled over the summer.
