Boyle’s renovates St George’s store
The St George’s branch of Boyle’s shoe store has closed - but only temporarily, the owners said.“We are not pulling out,” Courtland Boyle said yesterday. He said the store was undergoing renovations, recarpeting and repainting over the next five weeks.WJ Boyle & Son own the building, he said, and had no plans to leave the Old Town.He said the approximately month-long closure coming now as the tourist season gets underway was unfortunate, but they had just not been able to get the renovation project organised sooner.Noticing the closure of the Water Street store, some St Georgians expressed concern Boyle’s was following in the footsteps of AS Cooper’s and other retailers and also closing its doors because of the downturn in tourism and lack of cruise ship visits. After decades in St George’s, AS Cooper’s pulled out of the Old Town earlier this year and the Cracker Box souvenir store closed up last month, dealing a huge blow to the World Heritage Site’s struggling retail scene.
