MoneyShop opens its doors in Dockyard
The MoneyShop officially opened its doors in Dockyard this week, allowing cruise ship passengers and crew to send and receive money quickly and exchange currency. The new store, which is located above the Dockyard Pastry & Coffee Shop, is the third location for owner Lois Wilson, who opened the original Court Street store in August 2010, followed by the Washington Mall location in October 2011.Ms Wilson is the exclusive agent for MoneyGram in Bermuda and her shops offer money transfers, cheque cashing, US dollar travel money, visas, status applications and passports. In Dockyard the crew of the cruise ships and passengers are the primary focus.“We had received regular requests by passengers and crew of the cruise ships to open a location in Dockyard,” said Ms Wilson, adding that people can send and receive money instantly at any MoneyGram location throughout the world, including US stores such as Walmart, CVS pharmacies and UK post offices. “It’s a really fantastic network with more than 192,000 locations worldwide.”Ms Wilson said that her stores will also expand more in currency exchange, allowing cruise passengers to turn in their Bermuda cash before they depart the Island. She added that her Dundonald location will soon offer bill payment services for residents who may not have the Internet or banking accounts. Her customers range from all walks of life from foreign guest workers to local businesses paying suppliers overseas to places such as China.Soon, said Ms Wilson, the MoneyShop will go virtual with its own online services within the next couple of weeks. The site www.moneypad.bm will allow customers to send money with the click of a button. The MoneyShop’s main competitor is Western Union, which has three locations in Bermuda and is owned by Ms Wilson’s husband.“Some of our services are the same, some are different but the competition is neck to neck,” she said.Recently, the MoneyShop was named the “Fastest Growing MoneyGram Agent 2011” for Latin America and Caribbean Territory.Office Manager and COO Monica Marshall travelled to Montego Bay, Jamaica to be presented the award by a MoneyGram representative.“We were so excited to receive this award as Bermuda is one of the smallest countries in the region and has only started operating its Washington Mall store,” said Ms Wilson. “This is a testimony to having fantastic, friendly and professional staff who go the extra mile for our clients and to the loyalty of the clients that we have served.”The new Dockyard store’s hours are yet to be determined.
