The return of the mobylette — 21st century style
Elbow Beach Cycles is going green with new fleets of hybrid electric push bikes and electric scooters. The cycle shop launched a 40-electric bike fleet in January and within in two months time will introduce a fleet of ten electric scooters.Known as an ‘e-bike’, the hybrid bikes have maximum speed is up to 15 kilometres per hour can run up to 64 kilometres on one charge.Elbow Beach Cycles was established in 1945 by owner Dudley Thomas’ late father. The shop started out renting push bikes, then 50cc motorbikes and then scooters. Now owned and operated by Mr Thomas and his wife Dolores, the cycle shop has come full circle by bringing the hybrid electric bikes back to Bermuda. But this is not your grandmother’s mobylette. These are futuristic, fifth generation ‘pedelecs’ that has never been seen on the Island.Brought in from overseas supplier, TXED, the bikes have a distinctly European style and feature a rechargeable battery.Asked why they invested in the new fleet, Mr Thomas said: “We need more innovative ways to reinvigorate our tourism product. They are easy to use and 90 percent of our customers already know how to ride a bike. The learning curve is completely flat. It has universal appeal.”The cycle shop launched the new fleet in January and so far, reviews have been positive.“The response has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Mr Thomas. The e-bikes operate in various modes. Riders can choose to pedal only, or they may choose the power magnification mode in which the bicycle provides enough power to help the rider pedal more easily. Riders can also choose the assistance level — low, medium or high. In addition, there is a power-on-demand mode in which the bicycles offer a separate throttle that turns on the power and can run the bicycle with no pedalling at all.The bikes come in two models. The Freedom hybrid electric bike is designed for leisure riding on varied terrain and the Freedom Sport is more appropriate on road riding. The rental prices start at $29 for three hours and go up to $395 per month.Within the next two months, the company will be launching a new fleet of electric scooters that when fully charged have a 40 to 50 miles range. The one-person scooter is fully automatic and runs up to 20 miles per hour.
