BTC launches new PRISM fibre-optic network
BTC has launched a new fibre-optic network it claims will give Bermuda one of the most advanced networks in the Bermuda/Caribbean region. The new PRISM network will comprise a series of five fibre-optic rings covering the City of Hamilton, providing high-speed data and voice communications services. It’s built with redundancy in mind, meaning it has extra capacity in case certain components fail — like having a spare tyre in your car.BTC says the new multipurpose network will provide end-to-end quality of service performance and the highest capacity on the island — enough to deliver a mix of services including voice, video, wireless and data traffic along with critical business services. The company has teamed up with Cisco Systems, utilising its Carrier Ethernet System, including the Cisco ASR 9000 Series to support new and upgraded services on a common IP infrastructure. The Cisco network solution for service providers minimises the amount of time and technical resources required to test, implement and validate the performance of a network.BTC will also leverage Cisco’s Prime network management suite which will facilitate faster provisioning of customer services and reduce operational costs.BTC chief executive Lloyd Fray said the new network will provide dual benefits to both international and local businesses.“International business is a primary driver of Bermuda’s economy, and reliable communications services play a vital role in that success. Many of the world’s most influential businesses call our shores home,” Mr Fray said. “Investment in local infrastructure tells the world that Bermuda is open for business and infinitely well equipped to service them.“PRISM is not only a secure, reliable platform for Hamilton businesses but also supports those challenged with multiple locations through the island, as the network extends to both the Eastern and Western ends of the Island.”
