Another Washington Mall retailer has pulled up stakes, with the CB Dive Shop moving to Burnaby Street.The dive and swim shop now occupies the retail space that was Foreign Cargo, the upscale home goods store which closed last month due to the struggling economy taking three jobs with it.CB Dive Shop sells a wide range of scuba equipment to individuals and tour operators, from masks and snorkel gear to tanks and dive computers. The store also offers wake boarding and water ski gear, triathlon swimsuits, goggles and fins as well as fishing rods, reels and hooks.The shop had been in the Washington Mall for three years, however, owner Cesar Botelho decided to make the move citing high rental costs that he could no longer afford.“While they [landlords] came down a bit, it was not enough to warrant signing a three-year lease,” said Mr Botelho, an expert scuba diver who has been in the business for the past 15 years.By chance Mr Botelho found the new Burnaby Street location and opened just a week ago. Though the shop is 300 feet smaller than his old space, in just one week, he has seen an increase in foot traffic.Overall however, he said business is suffering, not unlike many other retailers in Bermuda.“Sales are way down because there are not enough expats around anymore,” said Mr Botelho. “They were my main customer base. But we’re surviving.”The shop owner also runs CB Wholesale, which sells general merchandise such as household utensils and stationery to grocery stores. But even sales from that side of the business are down.“I’m just trying to hang on for the next three years,” said Mr Botelho, who runs his business alone in order to keep his expenses low even though he’d like to hire someone part-time. “Just like other retailers, I’m just trying to survive, waiting to see what will happen with the election.”CB Dive Shop’s hours are: Monday-Tuesday 12pm-5pm; Wednesday-Saturday 9am-5pm; Sunday — closed.For more information call 292-3839 or e-mail cbwholesaleanddive@logic.bm.
