Friends take over home caregiving service, and make it grow
A recent ad on Emoo to take over a business grabbed the attention of Lena Campbell and Alex Lindo, and the two friends wasted no time contacting the seller. Now a month later they are the new owners of growing home caregiving business iCare Elder Solutions (IES).Ms Campbell and Ms Lindo both worked together at MAWI (Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute). Ms Campbell is a community support worker with more than 15 years of experience in caring for the elderly and physically and mentally challenged while Ms Lindo worked at MAWI caring for those with learning disabilities. She has also worked with the elderly, children, and has expertise in counselling for addiction and in other areas.“I saw the ad on Emoo and called Alex straight away,” Ms Campbell said, noting the ad had said the seller of the business was offering 100 percent financing. She said they brought a positive attitude to their meeting and interview with the owners, Care@Home, who liked that they had extensive experience in elder care, and eventually selected them to take over the business. Care@Home wanted to focus more on its busy housekeeping, child care/nanny business.Ms Lindo left her position at MAWI to manage the day-to-day administrative aspects of IES at its Atlantic House office.Owning a business has been a goal and she said she gained new perspective on life after a recent road accident.“I realised life is short!,” Ms Lindo said. She suffered a very fine break in her back after her car flipped on a slippery road in Somerset a year ago near St James Church. Fortunately, she was able to heal well and get back to work, but says she realises the accident could have left her in far worse condition.“The doctors said I was really lucky,” she said.In just a month, the new owners of iCare Elder Solutions have increased the business to six full time caregiver staff and two on-call/part-time staff.Ms Campbell said they offer much more than an in-home sitting service for the elderly. They offer 24-hour live-in service, a part-time companion service, specialist care, and Ms Campbell said their Bermudian and foreign caregivers are proactive in finding senior citizen events, lunches and programmes to attend if they are capable of getting out.Basic elder care rates start at $33 an hour, but will vary depending on whether the service required is live-in/24 hour, etc.IES caregivers are professional and well trained, and have a natural gift for caring for others. And IES has a thorough screening and interviewing process. For more information: www.icareeldersolutions.com.
