HSBC Bermuda has pulled its ATMs from three popular locations for shoppers to withdraw cash. It’s understood the ageing ATMs were in need of replacement, but the bank decided not to install new ones.HSBC ATMs were removed over the past few days from inside the Washington Mall, the Esso City Tigermart and the Esso at Collectors Hill.Washington Mall businesses, for one, were not happy about the removal of the ATM that has been located at the foot of the stairwell for many years. When asked why the ATMs were removed, an HSBC Bermuda spokesperson stated yesterday: “We are constantly reviewing our ATM network around the Island based on transaction volumes, machine age and replacement costs — and we are regularly making changes to our ATM network.“This year, we have replaced five older ATMs in high volume touch points with more upgrades to come before end of year. Three ATM's have been completely removed from service. These include Washington Mall, Esso City Tigermart and Esso Collectors Hill.”A Washington Mall spokesman said: “We are very disappointed that HSBC decided to remove their ATM. Whilst their Harbour View Branch is only just across the street; that can be inconvenient when it’s raining or the temperature and humidity make it unpleasant to venture out of the mall. We have many tenants and their employees who are not happy with losing the convenience of having an HSBC ATM in the Mall.”The HSBC spokesperson added: “We are committed to ensuring that our valued customers have access to a reliable and accessible ATM network. Customers are encouraged to take advantage of the debit and credit card point of sale transactions at most businesses Island-wide. If customers would like to withdraw cash, the nearest ATM location can be found on the public website. http://www.hsbc.bm/½/about/contact/atm-locations.”
